It is my pleasure to introduce myself to you - I'm Mrs Wendy Morgan and I have the privilege of teaching your child this year. This wiki will include news and photos from our class and each child has a page to write on. The stories that they write often won't be edited so don't worry about the mistakes, just enjoy reading about what your child has been up to in Room 1c. Below are some photos taken during my Christmas Holidays, I had a great Christmas day with my family, then we all flew to Brisbane to stay with my sister for three weeks. While we were there we went to a 20-20 cricket game, saw tennis at the Brisbane open and holidayed in Noosa before returning in time for my 28th wedding anniversary. If you have any concerns during the year please don't hesitate emailing me at morgan@wakaaranga.school.nz or come in and have a chat. Monday 17 February is our Junior School Meet the Teacher evening and we hope to see you all in our hall at 7.30.
Term 1 Week 2
The term has begun and the children have been working hard to make our room look great and to set up routines. A big thank you parents for sending along your child's stationery all ruled up and labelled and ready to work in. Thank you also for sending along the money for Life Education, the children are looking forward to visiting the caravan next week and learning about how we are all different and unique. Below are some pictures of the children taken last week so you can see who is in room 1c. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our Meet the Teacher Evening next Monday 17 February in the hall at 7.30. After a talk from Mrs Warburton you will move to 1c and I will talk to you about life in year 3 and the routines in our room.
Term 1 Week 2 Assembly
Well we have all survived the first full week of school and we had a very successful assembly winning the E award and having David get a principal's certificate for his name picture and Ben and Avneet getting school certificates for their hard work in 1c. Ben was also lucky enough to get a principal's pencil after being caught behaving positively in the playground. Keep up the great work 1c!
Life Education
The children have really enjoyed their two sessions with Celia in the Life Education caravan. Our last session yesterday was about our internal organs and how important they are and the jobs that they do to keep our body healthy. Our first session was about us and how we are all different and the fact that that is a great way to be. It is always good to have another teacher working with the children giving them a different perspective on what we are doing. Below are some photos of the children in the caravan and a link to the Personality song we are doing in assembly tomorrow.
Well done to Emily and Ryan who have been made house captains, well done also to all the many other children in the class who were willing to try out for the position.
Enjoy these poems for two voices written by the children in Room 1c with their talking buddies.
We are going to be learning about wild and wacky animals. We want to find out how and why they live where they do! Have fun building YOUR own creature!
Week 5
Well it is nearly halfway through the term and the children in 1c have been working hard on their recount writing this week. They especially enjoyed making popcorn and writing about it. On Friday it was our turn to host the area assembly and Nicole and Cody were our presenters (it was to be Soumil but unfortunately he was absent on Friday with chicken pox). Several children shared their two voices poems and Ben and Dominic showed a powerpoint they had made about Life Education. Both powerpoints are below so you can look at them.
Next week we are on art so if you haven't brought along your art shirt remember to bring it on Monday, the following week we are off to the zoo, thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help. Unfortunately we can only take three parents for free as the zoo is very strict about how many parents look after each group of children. Those parents who still want to come may like to carpool and meet us there and pay the entrance fee. We may have room on the bus for you but won't know if there is room until the morning of the trip.
Wow! We had an amazing exhausting day at the zoo today. A very big thank you to Ben's mum, Caleb's mum, Melanie's grandmother Jane and Cody's mum who came along and worked with a group of children. We had a wander around the zoo after morning tea when we arrived and then later after lunch we had a session in the zoo classroom with John who talked about animals and how they have special features that help them to survive. Below are some pictures that I took and I'm hoping those who had cameras will have others to share.
Cody's Mum Stacey took these amazing photos of animals her group saw at the zoo:
The new Waka Chick
At the end of the week we went to visit the newest Waka Chick - isn't it sooooo cute!
Congratulations to Yuvraj and Maddison who received certificates at our Junior Assembly on Friday 21 March!
Another great week in Room 1c
A big thank you to all the parents who have booked interview times for next week, I am looking forward to chatting to you all, even those who are coming on Wednesday which happens to be my 50th birthday! Remember that school finishes at 12.30 on Monday but at normal time on Wednesday. This interview is a parent discussion so the children do not need to attend, mid year when we have the Student Led Conferences the children need to be there to talk about their learning and next steps. If you are stuck for a baby-sitter I am happy for the children to be at the interview. The children had art with Mrs Murray a couple of weeks ago and painted these amazing Toucans which are on display outside our room. A couple are missing as the children were absent during this time.
In class this week we are lucky enough to have two university students working with us. Miss Botha and Miss Ellwood are impressed by the children's manners and willingness to give anything a try. This was evident this afternoon when we made origami paper boats for Mrs Warburton. Below is the youtube clip we used.
The children were sad to say goodbye to Miss Botha and Miss Ellwood today, they were only in our room for a week but they made a big impression on the class and we wish them all the best with their teacher training.
Congratulations to Soumil who had lunch with Mr Jenkin after all his hard work this term.
It is nearly the end of the term and the children have all worked very hard and are ready for a break. Mrs Warburton had her special retirement assembly today and all the children sang beautifully and she enjoyed our medley of Rod Stewart and ABBA songs.
Thursday we are having a "bring a wild animal" day so the children are able to bring a soft animal toy to school then.
Braetyn is finishing at Wakaaranga on Thursday May 8 and is moving to Tauranga with his family. We will all miss him and are planning on having a shared lunch on his last day, a note will come home at the beginning of term 2. Have a fantastic holiday with your children!
Term 2 2014
Welcome back for Term 2, my apologies for not being at school today but you may have heard that I was in town for my graduation receiving my Diploma in TESSOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) that I have worked on with Mrs Martin and Mrs Govender over the last four years, it was a lovely feeling to finally finish and to have my husband and parents there to see my moment. My holiday has been filled with moments - my husband and I spent the first week of the holidays in Melbourne where my husband competed in the Services games as a policeman and managed to win a silver medal in his age group for the half marathon. We also enjoyed seeing the Warriors beat the Melbourne Storm on ANZAC day in league and did lots of sightseeing and shopping. Last weekend we travelled to Rotorua and my husband ran the marathon in 4 hours and I walked the 10km in 1 hour and 15 minutes, we were both very proud of our achievements! I hope you all had lovely holidays too and I look forward to another term of hard work in Room 1C. This term we are having Move and Groove where each class learns and performs a dance at Farm Cove Intermediate at the end of the term. If any of you have dance skills or are great at making costumes please let me know!!! I have included some holiday photos below, the one of my husband and the royal couple William and Kate was taken at the police college where my husband went for morning tea as a member of the cadet wing that was opened by Prince Charles 33 years earlier.
Farewell to Braetyn
A big thank you to everyone who sent along food for Braetyn's farewell on Thursday, all the children had a great shared lunch and though it was sad to say good-bye to Braetyn I know he will enjoy his new school in Tauranga and quickly make new friends.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY
We hope all the mum's had a lovely day on Sunday and enjoyed looking at the cards that the children worked so hard on during the week.
A very big thank you to Mrs Reardon (Nicole's mum) who has volunteered to do my road patrol duty on a Thursday morning for this term. I really appreciate her help as it means I can spend my morning organising the day for your children.
Assembly Friday 16 May
Well done to our presenters Avneet, Soumil and Jojo for their excellent work on Friday at our assembly. Thank you to XinYa and Brian who helped me to give out the certificates and well done to Cody and Tamzin who received school certificates and to Hailey-Jade who was given a principals certificate from Mr Jenkin. Well done also to all the children who received positive choices (PC) awards for being caught behaving well in the playground.
Move and Groove 1st and 2nd July - note going home today about costumes for this event.
As your children may have mentioned we have Move and Groove coming up at the end of this term where each class choreographs a dance and performs it in the Farm Cove Gym for parents to watch and enjoy. I have chosen “Kung Fu Fighting” as our song and the children will each need to find a black t-shirt and pants/leggings or a white t-shirt and pants/leggings to wear. The children will have bare feet. I would like the children to bring these items of clothing to school at the beginning of week 7 (16 June) so we can start our dress rehearsals. I would like each child to wear a red belt and head band and these will need to be made for the class – if anyone has access to some cheap red material and/or the ability to sew please let me know. Also if anyone has any dance ability and can share some ideas that would be greatly appreciated as well. The performance dates are Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd July during the day (unsure of the times yet).
Digital Citizenship
We have had a talk today in class about the importance of being a good digital citizen and about thinking carefully about what we post online and to talk to an adult if we are uncomfortable about what we see when we are on the internet. Below is a youtube clip reminding the children about this, we will be singing the song at next weeks assembly.
Kung Fu Fighting No doubt your child has told you about our Kung Fu Fighting dance and I hope you have had success finding items for our costume. We are basing our dance on the youtube clip below so your child may like to share what we are doing with you. Remember the aim is to have fun!!
Fruit and Vegetable Faces
Today the children had fun making faces on plates using fruit and vegetables brought from home, they had even more fun eating them after they had been made and photographed. Next week the children will write instructions to go with their face photos. A big thank you to all the parents who sent along fruit and vegetables to be used for this fun activity. Below are some pictures of the children working and their creations.
Digital Citizenship
As you may be aware we having been talking a lot in class about being responsible when we are on line and not giving people we don't know information about ourselves. Below is a link to a website that has a couple of clips the children enjoyed watching last week about being a responsible digital citizen.
When you have gone on to this website click on Part 2 which is for children, we have watched story 1 and story 2 in class.
Term Two Week 4
Another great week has been had by all in room 1c this week. This morning Taryn and Soumil received certificates for hard work and Xin Ya got a principal's certificate for doing great maths in Miss Cunningham's class.
Photos from our walk to the Highland Park Library to participate in activities for Samoan Language Week
A big thank you to the mother's of Bronwyn, Kimberley, Ethan B, Ethan S and Aidan who made this visit possible.
Area Assembly 6.6.14
Well done to Yuvraj and Jasmine who were our presenters at the area assembly on Friday. Well done also to Melanie to operated the powerpoint with great skill! Below is a glimpse of what we did.
Stardome Trip 10.6.14
The children had a great trip to the Stardome today despite the horrible weather. We arrived early and had to entertain the children for 20 minutes until we were allowed into the Stardome - brilliant idea of Mrs Webb to do mexican waves up and down the bus. The children then saw an amazing show in the planetarium, had a wander around the foyer looking at space information and then we went into the classroom to talk about Matariki and other star related information with our teacher Vanessa. A big thank you to the parents of Soumil, Taryn, Ryan and Nicole who came to help.
Move and Groove
Just to let you know that our Move and Groove performances are during the last week of this term at Farm Cove Intermediate Gym on Tuesday 1 July and Wednesday 2 July from 1 to 3pm. Remember if anyone has any sewing skills please let me know asap. Thanks.
The amazing Year 1 Robot Assembly
The children all really enjoyed the Year 1 Robot Assembly yesterday, the costumes the children wore were all fantastic and indicated a lot of work by parents and children over the last week to make the outfits. Below are some photos that I took if you weren't there to witness the event. Congratulations to Dominic who got a certificate for his consistent hard work in class. I hope everyone who attended the disco on Friday night had a great time and please remember to bring in your Kung Fu clothes next week.
Tuesday 17 June
The children all really enjoyed the Space Jump that they saw this morning based on the New Zealand Post Book Awards. A big thank you to all the parents who have sent along the clothes for our move and groove dance. Next Friday is the dress rehearsal. This Friday we will get ourselves dressed up and see how we go dancing in costume. Below is one of our practices.
At our staff meeting on Tuesday Mr W-B introduced us to go-noodle, a brainbreak website that has been created by google for use in classrooms by teachers and the children are really enjoying it. It is free to join and you could join your children up and have fun having brainbreaks at home.
Congratulations to Kirralee who had lunch with Mr Jenkin today because of all of her hard work in room 1c.
We had a lot of fun this afternoon trying out the new senior school playground:
Move and Groove
Well done to all the children for their efforts with our Move and Groove dance on Tuesday and Wednesday and thank you to all the parents who came to watch them and provided them with the costumes for their dance. Just over $600 was raised and that money will be used to pay for the costumes the dancers wore. Thank you to everyone for all the hard work this term, all the children have earned their two weeks holiday!
Sky Jump
I hope everyone is having a lovely holiday, I was lucky enough to spend last week in Brisbane with my sister and I missed all the awful weather in Auckland. Today I went into town with a couple of friends on the ferry and I did my birthday sky jump - it was a bit scary being up so high but very exciting and the 192 metre jump was over in just 11 seconds.
Term 3
Welcome back everyone to what is going to be a very busy term. The children enjoyed listening to Jacob Anderson (Mrs Anderson's son) talk about his experiences in Antarctica on Friday in the hall.
Remember the following events over the next few weeks:
Student led conferences on Monday 28 July and Monday 4 August. Monday 4 August is a Teacher Only Day with the teachers having some professional development from Sheena Cameron who is an expert in reading and writing in the morning and then having interviews in the afternoon and evening. Please make sure you have booked an appointment and remember the children need to come to these interviews as they are leading them.
Cross country training starts on Monday so the children are allowed to wear their trainers on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to run in. If your child is unable to run for any reason you must send a note or your child will have to at least walk the course.
Swimming starts in week 3 and our day is Thursday. Thank you to the parents who have offered to help, you can come with us on the bus which will leave school at 1.30 or meet us at the Lloyd Elsmore pools for the lessons which start at 2 o'clock.
We have art with Mrs Murray in week 4 so we will swim on the Friday of that week.
Speeches have started with several children already sharing their speech with the class, those whose speech wasn't long enough will have to do it again.
If you have any concerns please let me know by emailing me at morgan@wakaaranga.school.nz, by sending a note or coming in to see me.
Term Three Week 2
Another week is over, thank you to all the parents who came to our Student Led Conferences on Monday and I look forward to seeing the rest of you sometime on Monday with your child. Remember there is no school in the morning as the teachers are having some professional development with Sheena Cameron. Remember swimming also starts next week on Thursday. Today Tamzin and Cody performed in front of us as part of the junior dance group and did so well, congratulations also to Jasmine, Maddison, Isabella and Ronald who received certificates at our year 3 area assembly today.
Speeches and Swimming
On Wednesday afternoon the year 3 children had their speech semi-finals and our class was represented by Kaizad, Judy, Isabella, Nicole and Melanie who all spoke very well and I was really proud of them. Six children from year 3 have been chosen to speak at the year 3 and 4 speech finals on Thursday morning and from our class Judy and Isabella were chosen after much deliberation by the teachers, we wish them both all the best.
Friday afternoon was our second swimming session and the children really enjoyed the opportunity to get wet and learn/develop some swimming skills. The children have been grouped according to their ability and are lucky to be having expert coaching for free thanks to the Auckland City Council. Below are some photos I took, it is hard to pick the children out with their goggles on but maybe you can spot your child!
SWIMMING TIME CHANGE - We are still swimming on a Thursday but we will be leaving at 1.00 on the bus and swimming at 1.30 until 2.00.
Well done to Jazmin who won the year 3 speech final on Thursday. Congratulations also to Judy, Isabella, Anamika, Chelsea and Bronwyn who spoke so well in front of all the year 3 and year 4 children. The judge Mr Munroe was very impressed.
Swimming Term Three Week Six
The children had a very enjoyable swimming session today wearing life jackets and learning what to do if they end up in the water. Below are some photos taken with my phone:
Our Trip to Ambury Farm
The children had an amazing trip today to Ambury Farm, they learnt lots about dairy farming and other farm animals and had a great time looking around at the animals and feeding them. A big thank you to Jojo, Kimberley, Nicole and Soumil's mums who came along to help and to Mrs Rogers. Below are some photos I took of our day -

Well done to all the children who ran so well on Monday for our school cross country, special congratulations to Jasmine who came first for the year 3 girls and Yuvraj who came second for the year 3 boys. Below are some photos taken by Mrs Martin:
Lunch with the Principal
Congratulations to Melanie who had lunch with the principal yesterday and thank you to Kirralee who took the photos, many of which also had her little sister in who had lunch with Mr Jenkin as well! Melanie was chosen by the class as the child who most deserved to have lunch with the principal with reasons such as - "she is always the best she can possibly be, she always sits up nicely and doesn't bother anyone" and "she is friendly and gets her work done on time." Well done Melanie!
Whole School Assembly - 23.9.14
Today we had a whole school assembly at the Farm Cove Intermediate Gym. Several of the children from 1c were involved in various ways - Tamzin and Taryn performed as part of the Kapa Haka, Nicole received a certificate for her excellent poetry writing and Jasmine and Yuvraj got certificates for their efforts in the school cross country. What a clever class we have!
Year 6 Production
The children all really enjoyed watching the Year 6 production on Wednesday, especially Brian, Ryan and Hailey-Jade who had older siblings in the cast. I have watched many of the year 6 productions over the years I have been at Wakaaranga and I was particularly impressed with this one that really appealed to my class and seemed at a good level for them to watch and understand. Well done to all the Year 6 teachers who have worked all term on this mammoth task.
Term 4 Week 1
First week back and the hectic last term has begun. This week the children enjoyed Scoot Skills on Wednesday and making Christmas Decorations on Thursday and Friday afternoons. A big thank you to those parents who came to help and to those who are coming next week to support the children in their making of Christmas Decorations to sell at our gala on Saturday 1st November. We are also on assembly next Friday and the children have brought home their words for the advertisements we are presenting.

The children did a great job and had a lot of fun even though it was a little bit tricky. They decorated their fan with a branch and pink blossoms that represented the season of Spring.
We all really enjoyed listening to Emily play jingle bells on her violin today.
Term 4 Week 10
Dear Parents and Amazing Children of Room 1C
I am so sorry that I can not be with you for your last week of Year 3 in room 1c. Sadly my dad died on Saturday night and right now I need to be with my family more than you. You have all worked so hard this year and I have loved teaching you all. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year and holiday break with you families. The performance dates are Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd July during the day (unsure of the times yet).Digital Citizenship
We have had a talk today in class about the importance of being a good digital citizen and about thinking carefully about what we post online and to talk to an adult if we are uncomfortable about what we see when we are on the internet. Below is a youtube clip reminding the children about this, we will be singing the song at next weeks assembly.Kung Fu Fighting
No doubt your child has told you about our Kung Fu Fighting dance and I hope you have had success finding items for our costume.
Below are some pictures of the children working and their creations.Digital Citizenship
As you may be aware we having been talking a lot in class about being responsible when we are on line and not giving people we don't know information about ourselves. Below is a link to a website that has a couple of clips the children enjoyed watching last week about being a responsible digital citizen.http://www.themoreyouknow.com/growing-up-online-read-now/

I hope everyone is having a lovely holiday, I was lucky enough to spend last week in Brisbane with my sister and I missed all the awful weather in Auckland. Today I went into town with a couple of friends on the ferry and I did my birthday sky jump - it was a bit scary being up so high but very exciting and the 192 metre jump was over in just 11 seconds.Term 3
